When it came to auditioning for America's Got Talent, Brian Justin Crum had more on his agenda than just wowing the judges with his voice

"For me, it's really important to inspire the LGBT youth – for them to know that we are a very bullied and a very misunderstood community, but not only does it get better, it gets amazing," Crum tells PEOPLE. "If you work hard enough, you can have whatever you want and more. That's where I'm at right now. I'm in a place finally where all my dreams are coming true because I stuck with it."

During his audition, the 28-year-old admitted that he "had a lot of hard times" when he was growing up, and wants to be an example for the younger generation.

"It's so important for kids in general – but especially LGBT kids – to see someone do well," he says. "That's what I would like people to know."
